Cocktail of the Week: The Secret Cocktail

1376646_664877044358_1518962928_nThe other day, while looking for something a little different to mix up, I came across “The Secret Cocktail” in our Classic Cocktails book. Secret? Well, I’m intrigued. Tell me more.

Now, this is not the real name of this drink, as the description in our book was quick to point out. However, because of its true identity, many people tend to shy away from the drink, despite its excellent flavor. The thing is, the name is a bit of a misnomer, because this drink is anything but ‘girly’ – it is in face quite strong. So brace yourselves for the

Pink Lady!

Ok, guys, I understand why you might not want to order this in a bar. But seriously! It’s a fantastic drink, and you can make it in the privacy of your home without fear of ridicule. I warn you though, once you taste it, you might just throw caution to the wind and order it next time you’re out. It’s that good (I think). And I’m pretty partial to my update, The Sparkling Lady. Add sparkling wine? Why not, right?

Ok, the original first:

1 1/2 oz Gin

1/2 oz Applejack (or Calvados)

1/2 oz fresh lemon juice

Scant 1/2 tsp real, natural grenadine (try Employees Only brand)

1 egg white

Combine all the ingredients in a shaker and shake vigorously without ice (this gets the egg white good and foamy). Add ice, and shake thoroughly. Strain into a cocktail glass or coupe. Drop in a real Maraschino Cherry (see here for more on those).

Update: Sparkling Lady

Once shaken, strain into a champagne flute and top with sparkling wine.

Be bold: sip a Pink Drink!
